Austen wrote, "I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like," and with that, she created the character Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, rich, and self-satisfied, and who delights in meddling in the romantic lives of others. The novel "Emma", perhaps Austen's most perfect, has captivated generations of readers, and more recently, has been adapted to film, television and stage.
