En octubre de 1963, cuando Annie Ernaux se halla en Ruan estudiando filolog a, descubre que est embarazada. En una sociedad en la que se penaliza el aborto con prisi n y multa, Annie Ernaux se encuentra sola; hasta su pareja se desentiende del asunto. Despu s de pasar por varios m dicos que cierran los ojos ante su problema, y de intentar pedir ayuda entre sus conocidos y amigos, consigue que una mujer que ha pasado por la misma situaci n le d una direcci n y le preste la enorme suma de dinero que necesitar . Adem s del desamparo y la discriminaci n por parte de una sociedad que le vuelve la espalda, queda la lucha frente al profundo horror y dolor de un aborto clandestino.

A woman facing a society where abortion is a taboo (and a crime)

In October 1963, when Annie Ernaux is in Rouen studying philology, she discovers that she is pregnant. From the very first moment, she has no doubt that she does not want to have this unwanted child. In a society where abortion is penalized with imprisonment and fines, Annie Ernaux finds herself alone; even her partner distances himself from the matter. After going through several doctors who turn a blind eye to her problem, and trying to seek help among her acquaintances and friends, she manages to get a woman who has been through the same situation to give her an address and lend her the enormous sum of money she will need. Besides the abandonment and discrimination by a society that turns its back on her, there remains the struggle against the profound horror and pain of a clandestine abortion.
