East Side Authors A Collection of Children Stories

Eastside Tutors, Inc. is a neighborhood community center in the urban area of east Indianapolis that provides academic tutoring, literacy skill building, reading comprehension, critical thinking, test-taking strategies, and mentoring programs for preschool thru high school aged children. We believe that by engaging students in after school tutoring and civic learning, their academic performances in school will increase; resulting in greater self-confidence and self-esteem, and a lifelong desire to read and achieve. Our programs will enable students to continue striving for excellence throughout all aspects of their lives. Mrs. Toria Sanders is a former public school teacher, who opened Eastside Tutors to assist students in improving school test scores and writing skills. The tutoring center was originally started to help students who were failing or falling through the cracks of the public school setting. Word began to spread about the center's success rate and students from all backgrounds and academic levels started enrolling. This book was written as part of our urban literacy program to encourage students to enhance writing techniques and engaging them in the writing process format. By writing short stories about their own lives, the students learned to enjoy writing more as an adventure rather than a grueling task.
