Doll'S House

Henrik Ibsen, a Norwegian writer, wrote the three-act play A Doll's House. After being published earlier in the month, it had its world premiere on December 21 at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark. The piece is set in an 1879-era Norwegian town. Despite the fact that Ibsen denied it, the play is about the fate of a married woman who, at the time, in Norway, lacked realistic prospects for self-fulfillment in a world controlled by males. It created a storm of angry debate that spread from the theater to the world of journalism and society at the time, creating a huge sensation. A Doll's House held the distinction of being the most-performed drama in the entire globe in 2006, the year of Ibsen's death and the century of his birth. In 2001, in appreciation of the historical importance of Ibsen's handwritten manuscripts for A Doll's House, UNESCO inscribed them on the Memory of the World Register. Although some academics prefer A Doll House, the play's title is most frequently rendered as A Doll's House.
