Northeast is one such region in India which feels and is excluded from rest of the country. It is not just a matter of feeling but almost all development indicators point towards a position of utter backwardness. Apart from these, a major factor of discrimination of northeast lies in the Parliamentary form of democracy in which the population logic of constituency formation has directly marginalised the people of the region. But apart from being neglected, there are many other factors which have been given birth to self-determination movements in the region. Historical reasons are very important and also the process of state formation itself is at the roots of political disturbance of Manipur and Northeast India. The violence perpetuated in Northeast India is not 'violence perse' but is a reaction to the state intrusion and violence entertained by it. The three chapters in the volume are largely centering on these perspectives: Regional Exclusion; Self-Determination Movements and Ethnic Violence. The book will be helpful to policy-maker, developmental planner, Area studies, Conflict and Human Rights Studies, and North East Studies.
