California Foundations of Education

California is one of the most important states when it comes to the development of classroom curriculum, yet there is very little literature that looks at its development, leaving state-based pre-service teachers without a resource for studying the phenomenon. California Foundations of Education fills that gap.

It discusses important questions such as how has the unique diverse social history of California impacted the development of its public schools? Did California have legalized school segregation? Is there anything about the political structure of California that may have an impact on education that is not discussed in traditional texts? How are textbooks selected in California?

The organization of this textbook is structured by the similar topics as traditional textbooks, but approaches every topic by focusing on education in California, and especially how it is impacted by California’s diversity. It will serve as an important volume to inspire similar studies in other states, and it will be a vital resource for teachers and future teachers in California in helping them to understand how education in California has developed.
