It is about learning stuff the hard way, being stretched beyond the beyond, having the heart learn stuff the brain cannot comprehend. The story is narrated in a backwoods dialect, which may be hard to understand at times, but it represents the struggle that each one of us must go through as we seek to learn and grow from ignorance to enlightenment.
