Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The reception given to the first edition has been most gratifying, and confirms my idea that there was an opening for such a work, particularly among those, both chemists and engineers, who have to assist in the control of boiler plant, but who have not the time, or the chemical knowledge necessary, to make a special study of the subject.

Suggestions have been made that the book should be considerably enlarged to make it a complete and up-to-date work of reference on the subject, going into a full discussion of the subject of corrosion, and giving detailed descriptions of all the principal makes of softening plant. I have decided not to adopt the suggestion, as the question of corrosion has been so ably dealt with by other writers, and detailed descriptions of softening plants are furnished by the makers.

At the same time I recognise that the chapter on softening plants could very well be made more useful by outlining the special features of the plants of the best known makers, and I have, therefore, entirely revised the chapter, and trust it will now give sufficient information to enable anyone to make a preliminary selection when requiring to install such a plant.
