Rita Patel, a history student and solver of mysteries, is snatched from the busy centre of the city of Leicester, her home town. It is spring 2016, and Rita should be returning to uni for her second year exams. While the authorities make their inquiries, Rita's desperate family and friends begin a social media campaign and hit the streets to retrace Rita's steps and get her back.

Suspicion falls on a lodger who stayed at the family home for a while, and on Rita's boyfriend. Meanwhile Rita's old school friend, Priya, learns about the murder on a train of Afzal Kahn. Rita was a witness to the incident and gave evidence in the trial of his daughter Tanisha. Could those events be connected?
