Cell division is the most significant event of the cell cycle: a single organism duplicates itself, and two new individuals emerge. A preliminary process that occurs before the physical division of the cell is the duplication of the DNA inside the cell. The DNA contains the genetic information of the organism, and is tightly packed inside the volume of the cell. There are two large families of cells: Eukaryote cells, which do have a nucleus containing the DNA, and Prokaryote cells, which do not, but their DNA is tightly packed within a region known as the nucleoid. Eukaryote cells are evolutionarily more advanced than the prokaryotes. The latter are probably the most ancient living habitants of our planet.
