Australia Unsettled demystifies economic policy debates in and  examines the legacy that some twenty years of ‘neo-liberal’ economic views  has left behind. In particular, it gives the reader the means to understand  the economic policies and debates that dominate political discourse in .

A central argument of the book is that ’s past political economic  framework led to a pattern of economic development which became  increasingly out of step with global economic developments. Governments since the early 1980s have tried to restructure the Australian economy to adapt to these changed circumstances. This process has involved the dismantlement of ‘settled’ policies. This restructuring has been guided by the rise to dominance of ‘neo-liberal’ or ‘economic rationalist’ views. The legacy of the policies inspired (or justifi ed) by these views has fallen short of  its promises, leaving vulnerable and ‘unsettled’.
