Apple Pies and Other Lies

Growing up in the 90's, my weekends were punctuated with endless VHS tapes and sleepovers with

friends. As the calendar flipped over to the 2000's and we became teenagers, those weekend gettogethers inevitably began to include discussions of crushes and our own emerging sexuality. My early

years were spent in a conservative small town with little in the way of sex education and practically no

access to sex-positive resources. As such, the teen movies of the 90's and 2000's taught me much of

what I knew about sex and sexuality.

This book is a love letter to the movies I grew up with, a deep-dive into the teen films of the 90's and

2000's and the depictions of sexuality they contain. I'm taking a closer look at how these movies shaped

my own ideas about sex, and how they measure up to real-life experiences and sexual facts. Apple Pies

and Other Lies explores the ways in which entertainment has been used to fill the gaps in our sexual

knowledge, and why it's no substitute for comprehensive sex -ed.
