Anne of the Island was published in 1915, seven years after the bestselling Anne of Green Gables. Montgomery published in 1908. The original book follows the adventures of Anne Shirley, a precocious young orphan girl living on Prince Edward Island. ... Though the book is a work of fiction - there is no real Anne Shirley on whose life the events in it are based - Anne of Green Gables does have some ties to reality.
