Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The present edition of this work, besides containing all the addi tions in the last German edition, which were partly derived from the manuscripts of the lamented author, and in great part contri buted by the Editor, Professor Welcker of Bonn, is enriched with a considerable number of additions which that eminent archaeologist was so obliging as to transmit to me while the translation was pass ing through the press.
