El 15 de octubre de 2020, el arresto del general Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda en el aeropuerto de Los ngeles, California, sacudi las estructuras del poder militar en M xico. El Departamento de Justicia de Estados Unidos lo acusaba de usar su rango para ofrecer protecci n al C rtel de Sinaloa, as como de recibir sobornos millonarios y estar coludido con dicha organizaci n criminal para el trasiego de drogas. La denominada "Operaci n Padrino" era la investigaci n internacional m s s lida y contundente sobre un militar mexicano relacionado directamente con el narcotr fico. Pese a esto, nadie en el gobierno de M xico supo de lo que las autoridades estadounidenses ten an entre manos hasta la detenci n del general.

J. Jes s Esquivel --corresponsal en Washington, D. C. de la revista Proceso-- fue el primer reportero en tener pistas sobre esta operaci n meses antes del arresto, cuando un fiscal federal de distrito --a quien conoci durante el juicio de Joaqu n El Chapo Guzm n en Nueva York-- le dio el pitazo. On October 15, 2020, the arrest of General Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda at the Los Angeles airport shook the military fabric in Mexico. The United States Department of Justice accused him of using his rank to protect the Sinaloa Cartel, as well as receiving millions in bribes, and conspiring with said criminal organization to smuggle drugs. The so called "Operation Godfather" was the most solid and compelling international investigation about a Mexican military man directly linked to the drug trade. Regardless, nobody in the Mexican government knew what the American authorities had in mind until the General was apprehended.

J. Jes s Esquivel--Washington, DC correspondent for Proceso--was the first reporter to have any clues on this operation months before the arrest, when a Federal District Attorney, whom he had met during Joaqu n "Chapo" Guzm n's trial in New York, tipped him off.
