A History of Warrington

A town at a crossroads, Warrington’s position on one of the key north-south routes of England, where it crosses the east-west axis of the Mersey valley, has for 2,000 years helped to shape its destiny. A Roman road crossed the river here, then the medieval bridge brought much trade to its market; while the modern motorway network has given the town an almost unrivalled location for commercial and industrial development. Despite its antiquity, in the late 1960s it was designated a new town and in the next 30 years it was transformed into a major regional centre.
