This is the second volume of the trilogy, A Revolutionary Education, which tells of the picaresque adventures and travails of the secretaries of the recently deceased Voltaire. They must find the courage and stamina to defend and protect the philosopher's library sold to Catherine the Great of Russia, through dangerous lands and treacherous seas, where brigands, tyrants and storms threaten to steal, burn, or send Voltaire's books to the bottom of the sea.
