Maiju Lassila is the pseudonym of a world-famous Finnish writer (born Algoth Tietäväinen), who spent the time of his childhood and youth in Sortavala district. One of his most famous books is the humorous story "Out to Borrow Matches" ("Tulitikkuja lainaamassa"). It is well known to Russian readers in the translation by Mikhail Zoshchenko and via the film by Leonid Gaidai, starring Evgeny Leonov and Vyacheslav Nevinny.
