What Happened to the Gays?: Understanding LGBTQ Assimilation

What has happened to the LGBTQ community? Have we become "just like you" or are we still a subculture with its own values of sexual experimentation? The answer to this question requires a refined understanding of assimilation, which has become a dirty word among liberationists and academics. Using the archives of the ACTUP Oral History project, this book resolves the longstanding split in the LGBTQ community between assimilationists and liberationists by showing how it has evolved from a counterculture to an assimilated subculture, and that we are NOT 'just like you'.
