Tropical Freshwater Wetlands

This text deals with the sustainable management of some of the most valuable environmental assets available to developing countries - that is, floodplains, marshes, swamps and shallow water bodies. The main types of tropical freshwater wetlands are described, their value is highlighted, and human intervention and its impact on wetlands are reviewed. A general approach to, and guiding principles for, the sustainable management of these particular ecosystems are then proposed. Finally, sources of expertise and further information are indicated. The book also features 13 case studies in which 17 specialists report on wetland management "in the field", a literature list which includes some 900 entries, data on more than 150 experts, and a system of indexes facilitating access to information and know-how. This work is intended as a reference book and guide for all those who are interested in development or natural resources management planning at the subnational level.
