The tragic death of Floyd Collins in 1925 has inspired books, movies, musicals, and more. It is a compelling story, one that juxtaposed media melodrama with the loneliness of death. The narrative reported from Sand Cave, Floyd's eventual tomb, made a local story into a worldwide-sensationalized one. This play came about from its author's tendency to dive deeply into research topics and a large cast of very talented young men in search of a play. The author became playwright, designer, and director, while the young men went on to win a regional competition with a one-act version of the play in 2006.
