Two hundred thousand years ago, the Milky Way was seeded with metal spheres filled with entangled quantum bits. The devices allowed digitized intelligence to live inside created worlds. As technological civilizations on other worlds learned how to encode intelligence, they entered these quantum portals, joining a multi-species society that lived inside. The portal makers disappeared a long time ago, and just when humankind needed it most, the system was in crisis.
