When Richard Hannay returns to London from Rhodesia, he finds himself entangled in a deadly conspiracy. A journalist is murdered in his flat, and soon Hannay is pursued across the Scottish countryside by both the police and a shadowy network of spies. With only his wits to rely on, he must race against time to stop a plot that threatens national security. Taut, fast-paced, and sharply atmospheric, The Thirty-Nine Steps [1915] is a classic thriller that laid the groundwork for modern espionage fiction, combining relentless action with a gripping sense of paranoia and pursuit. JOHN BUCHAN (1875–1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, and politician, best known for his adventure and espionage fiction. A prolific writer, he produced dozens of novels, biographies, and historical studies, but remains most famous for The Thirty-Nine Steps, a landmark in the development of the modern thriller. In addition to his literary career, he served as Governor General of Canada from 1935 until his death, and was celebrated for his intellect, public service, and enduring contribution to popular fiction.
