The Space in Between

With the war pushing itself across Latvia in 1915, nine-year-old Nina finds herself caught up in the exodus of people desperately seeking refuge elsewhere. It is six years before she is able to return home - her life irrevocably marked by much tragedy. Then, with peace proclaimed and the darkness of the war years slowly dissipating, two important relationships eventually manage to weave happiness into all the adversity, bringing some stability to Nina's life. But, in 1939, any kind of stability disintegrates as Latvia is once again thrown into the confusion of war, and Nina's life moves in an unexpected and irreversible direction. Nina's story stretches across Latvia, Belarus, Russia and, finally, Sweden. It tells about war and exile, separation and loss. It tells about the goodness that is always present despite seemingly impenetrable darkness and oppression.
