Dr. David Webb, who is a Reserve Deputy Sheriff in Linden, Virginia, works with patient Ashlea Moss and homeless man Willie Nelson to solve the six-year-old apparent murder of Sunnie Kinsdale and another related death of Alexa Mitchell, Dr. Webb's former fianc . Surviving numerous attempts on his life, David pursues the investigation relentlessly. Ashlea, who is injured in the bombing of a politician's campaign office, survives but is changed. She is a very highly skilled Security Software programmer but discovers that she can now leave her body at will, and finds that she has knowledge she never had before. She has increased hearing and other, as yet, undiscovered abilities.Willie the Homeless Man is a fixture in Linden. Due to circumstances, Willie provides the Sheriff's Office with the license plates of a car speeding away from a scene where explosives are found in David's car. He is subsequently beaten. David performs surgery to repair damage to the kidney and broken bones. He befriends Willie and takes him into his home and eventually adopts him as a brother.
