It is almost a century since the outbreak of the First World War, and there are now no surviving British veterans. But the horrors, and the triumphs, of this wide-ranging and immensely destructive conflict -which affected so many people both on the domestic front and in the trenches - still resonate in the British national psyche. Military historian Peter Hart is uniquely well placed to offer a dramatically intimate account of the events of this devastating war.
