The Gadarene: Freedom can be frightening

In the first century AD, in the area on the shores of the Sea of Galilee known as Gadara, resided a mixed-up populace of cultists, greedy merchants, fearful people, and impure pig-makers, and there also lived, tormented by a legion of demons, "the Gadarene." Whenever a man is freed after years of slavery, the enslaving society will find that a demon-possessed man who has suddenly recovered can become a nuisance sign of a power higher than that which hitherto operated on him.
