The theme of the book is the reliance on faith when social dogma and technology no longer serve. Three diverse sets of marginal characters struggle within their social niches to deal with dramatic changes in their lives while personal relationships evolve under the pressure of environmental turmoil. Book two sets the stage for the remainder of the series with exotic locations and subcultures that span diverse technological niches and characters ill suited to survival in a world gone wrong.
