The Eagles

Stalingrad was the last clash of the inheritors of two lost empires - Germany and Russia - both represented by Eagles. The Germans were largely led by members of aristocratic families, now also in eclipse. The Russians had eradicated their leading classes and experienced generals. They relied on sheer numbers. This book shows the private side of some of those who came to be involved, particularly Carlo Cassini, from an old Italian family, how he came to be in this bitter battle and what became of him after his capture.
