Lugard's experience as governor of Nigeria among other colonial and African experiences made him an authority on British colonialism. His writing provided guidance for the colonies' governance using indirect rule and touted the spread of Christianity. He also promoted an increasing commerce through exports and curbing slave trade. This work is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand colonialism of this era through a primary source document.
