Korolenko is one of a number of writers creating during the last decades of the 19th Century.

An activist for socialist reform, he spent a considerable amount of time in Siberia as a result.

Although overshadowed by Chekhov, Tolstoi and Dostoevsky amongst others, Korolenko deserves greater attention than he is given, revealing, as he does, the battle between dark ignorance and the light of truth and justice.
