The Book of Happiness

Vera lives a dreary life in Paris tied down by a demanding invalid husband. She is summoned to the scene of a suicide, that of her childhood's boon companion, Sam Adler, whom Vera has not seen in years. His death reduces her to a flood of tears and memories.
