The genre of symphony may be called the sphere of paramount importance in Ludwig van Beethoven's (1770-1827) creation. The nine symphonies seem to embrace all the periods of the composer's spiritual life. Robert Schumann likened the Fourth symphony to "the Grecian maiden of graceful aspect between two giants from the Northern countries". These are such elements as the spiritual integrity, boundless joy and lofty unruffled happiness, which the Fourth Sympphony is ruled by.
It was firstly performed in Vienna in 1807.
