Charlie Emett has compiled a pictorial history of Stockton-on-Tees. With this superb collection of over 200 photographs, he illustrates many aspects of the town’s development – both as a port and as a commercial centre – following the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825. The resulting changes experienced by the town are portrayed during its period of rapid expansion: new enterprise, major businesses, churches, shops and leisure activities are included, as well as the activities of local and eminent personalities. Many of these scenes are captured here by the region’s famous newspapers, the Northern Echo and the Darlington & Stockton Times. This book brings the diversity of life in Stockton-on-Tees over the last 100 years sharply into focus for the reader.
