His father's experiences in WWII cast a shadow over Don's childhood. Every issue was filtered through his father's silent grief, strict discipline, and lessons in survival. Don struggled to understand the mythic events that occurred before he was born-the Marine Corps and the war-because he felt the continued power of those distant events. Whatever happened to his father still lived, and Don felt compelled to find it and face it. So, he joined the Marines and went to Vietnam.
