Ribe Excavations 1970-76, Volume 6

The present volume marks the end of the series of publications covering the excavations that took place in central Ribe (in Southern Denmark) in the period 1970-76. A resume of the progress of the scientific interpretation of the excavations since the release of the other volumes in the series is included in the publication. The current volume presents the debris of glass bead material - amounting to almost 3000 pieces - from the glass bead workshops from the Eight Century AD onwards, published with full documentation, the Mayen lava quern stones predominantly found in the market area and in layers dated to the Viking Age, to the high Middle Ages; a hammer-shaped amulet of lead; the results of the supplementary excavation of bronze workshops in the garden of the Art Museum; and the socio-economy of early Ribe from the Eight Century AD, with an extensive discussion of the sceattas found in Ribe and the possible cattle export.
