The book details the fundamental principles, strategies, tools and techniques necessary for the effective planning and execution of urban renewal projects in India. Using illustrative examples, it examines the significant initiatives undertaken at the central, state, and municipal levels for rejuvenation of cities.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and the Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) are among the prominent central government initiatives discussed in the book. At city level, it briefly presents the urban renewal initiatives taken by various urban local bodies including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Indore, Ahmedabad, Mysore City, Pune, Hyderabad, Ayodhya and Varanasi. This book also discusses urban reforms, as a non-spatial approach to rejuvenation of cities, for improving urban governance, municipal finances, quality of life of citizens and ease of doing business and includes revision of building byelaws, efficient GIS based urban planning and mapping of properties, online grievance redressal system and service delivery.
