This text comprises the reports of the proceedings of a symposium held on 29 November-2 December, 1995. It aims at both giving a convenient introduction in some of the most topical issues of paediatric nutrition to newcomers in the field, as well as reporting the current developments to respective experts. Major emphasis is given to infant nutrition and body composition, nutrition and integrity of the gut system, and maternal nutrition and its effects on the fetus and newborn. In addition to long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids which are addressed extensively, attention is also paid to other topical nutrients like cholesterol, iron and indispensable amino acids. Edited discussions follow each of the five sessions recorded in this volume.
