Rambling Birds

World War I had ended; peace was here at last. Wanderv gel (Tramping Birds), members of Germany's nonpolitical youth groups, were once again free to explore the countryside. With rucksacks on their backs and songs on their lips, they tramped from village to village and from city to city. While on the road, they enjoyed camaraderie, learned self-sufficiency, delved into folklore, and had many cultural experiences. Kurt, a young adventurous teenager from Berlin, had been a Wandervogel. His diary, in which he chronicled his 1920/1921 amazing travel experiences in pictures and in words - often witty, sometimes pensive - did not come to light until close to a hundred years later, when his daughter, the author of this book, found it in an old box in the attic and decided it would make delightful reading for young people as well as adults.
