Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. Practically all they have done is to make use of the new vowel sounds (more or less), and sometimes of conso nantal i and u. It is a common thing for correct syllable length to receive practically no attention at all; and as for the reading of Latin verse, the old-fashioned English accent-rhythm is almost as much in vogue now as it was twenty years ago. This book is not written for schoolmasters: Wir wollen nicht Eulen nach Athen tragen. It is intended principally for (1) private students who desire to learn to pronounce and to read Latin correctly; and (2) those who feel that their acquired pronunciation needs overhauling. Considerations of space have, for the most part, resulted in the omission of discussions concerning the researches which have led to the adoption of the rules here laid down. Of original research, the book embodies comparatively little. It is largely the outcome of an examination of the researches of others, and of a checking and sifting of the evidence on which the results of those researches are based. Numerous authorities have been consulted and when on any point there has been any serious disagreement amongst them, the preponderating weight of opinion has been allowed to decide. Needless to say, this has never involved a mere counting of heads.
