The book links scientific accomplishments, science policies, and economic growth; and does so in ways intended to interest scientists, policy makers as well as the intelligent layperson. The book offers brief commentary on humanity's intellectual development over the past few million years from a novel perspective. It explains the urgent need to ensure that originality and dissent should be no less today than they have always been throughout our extended history. Unfortunately, global trends and policies threaten these conditions. The book, and the initiatives in which the author is currently involved, offer a possible solution.
