Smallpox strikes. Mongols invade. The women of a medieval Burmese village are driven to desperate measures to survive, and break every tradition to transform themselves and their children into a warrior clan. Generations later, their descendants set up a trading outpost in medieval Constantinople. Cultures clash as the newcomers strive to preserve their ways yet win acceptance in the Christian West.
