A general and comprehensive overview of the main stages or periods of Puerto Rico's monetary history. Beginning from pre-Columbian period, and covering the "situado" subsidy, the monetary crisis throughout the nineteenth century, and the different monetary systems implemented before and after US intervention in 1898, and their effects in our numismatic legacy: provisional paper money, cob coins, perforated and counterstamped coins (fleur-de-lys), foreign coinage, the provincial silver coinage of 1895-1896, plantation and merchant tokens, and official banknotes, among other.
