Origin and Character of the British People

Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The evidence at our disposal regarding the emigration of foreign races into Western Europe is perhaps more reliable than that of the origin of the aborigines. In some respects this is the most interesting part of our subject, because we believe that Englishmen are largely indebted to one or more of these foreign races for qualities which form an important element in their national character.
