It was the venue for one of the closest and most thrilling Test matches in England in 1902, when Australia won by 3 runs; it was where Alan Lamb scored the third of his successive Test centuries in 1984 (just as Charlie Macartney did in 1926); it was the setting for Fred Trueman's demolition of India in 1952 and Jim Laker's nineteen-wicket haul in 1976.
