Netherlandish Art and Luxury Goods in Renaissance Spain

sidottu, 2018
englanti
From the early fifteenth century onwards, Netherlandish art and luxury goods flooded the Spanish market. Not only were vast amounts of these cultural products exported to the Iberian Peninsula, but Netherlandish artists were frequently employed there as well. Spanish artists, on the other hand, were occasionally trained in the Low Countries. This collection of essays explores the diverse ways in which these foreign artists and objects - their visual ideas, styles and techniques - shaped and transformed the artistic landscape of Renaissance Spain. Focusing on multiple artistic media and artefacts, such as sculpture, painting, prints, reliquaries and scientific instruments, the book aims to map a variety of market segments, patronage networks and processes of transmission. Together, the contributors provide a fascinating and multifaceted account of the artistic impact of the Low Countries on Spain in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
