It differs from other books on leadership by providing practical "navigational tools" or "beacons"--namely, activities and resources that have been gathered from personal experiences of the authors and from students in their doctoral studies. In the six sections of this compilation, the following essentials include: Examining Leadership Creating Authenticity Charting Direction Delegating to Strengths Aligning Operations Starting the Journey The organization of each chapter is as follows: One essential characteristic of effective organizations is considered. A big question lays the foundation for ideas presented. Using the ship as an analogy for the organization, a comparison is included. Tools are provided from which leaders may select to assist in developing the skillset. References to writings by recognized leaders serve as "anchors" to support the authors' ideas regarding each skillset.
