For 2025 Milton Keynes Literary Festival adopted Home as the theme for a flash fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry competition. How to interpret the brief was left entirely up to the entrants. Within these covers, you will find writing that honours the complexities that lurk within such a short, seemingly simple word, and pieces that reflect the depth and variety of emotions that its many definitions can evoke.

Here you will encounter ghosts in conversation with gardeners, childhood recollections, homes being created or remembered, and families being made - or being unmade. There are tales of kindness and compassion, fear and despair, doll houses, sand demons and beavers, and of nostalgia that can be sweet or sour.
