At the end of the nineteenth century, a time of dreams and nightmares for Mexico, the Yucatan peninsula offered two sides of reality: on one hand, peasant slaves subjugated by the production of henequen, and on the other, the ideal of progress and the promise of economical prosperity.

Known at the time as Mexican "green gold," this species of agave pushed the development of a powerful agroindustry that survived up to the invention of the synthetic fibers that replaced it. However, the human cost of henequen exploitation was so high, that many atrocious episodes were kept in the dark for a long time.

In An Enslaved Mexico, Francisco Mart n Moreno lashes out with the best weapons he has against silence: based on the love story between Olegario and Marion, he invents the story of a staunch defense of human dignity and social justice.
