The city began life in around AD 79 as a civilian settlement associated with the Roman fort of Mamucium, or Mancunium, based near the confluence of the rivers Medlock and Irwell. It was with the onset of the Industrial Revolution that Manchester really began to thrive and develop into the city we know and love today.
